BYD Atto 3 Evo

The Atto 3 is the car that started BYD’s Australian run in 2022, and from the kerb this update barely registers – new nose, full-width tail-lights, job done. Underneath is another story. The $46,990 Premium swaps front drive for a 230kW rear motor good for 0–100km/h in 5.5 seconds, a 74.88kWh Blade battery and 800-volt charging. The $41,990 Dynamic sticks with front drive and 150kW. Same name, different car.

Is it fun? Genuinely. It responds keenly to the throttle, is adjustable mid-corner and stays flat through bends – hardly cheap-Chinese-shitbox behaviour, and we say that fondly. Does it ride? Really well, and the linear steering builds a confidence earlier BYDs never managed. Is the cabin better? Yes – soft-touch dash, proper brightwork and a column shifter that frees up the console – though the guitar-string door cards and odd handles survive. It’s properly quiet too, bar some A-pillar wind rustle. What about range? We saw a realistic 460–480km against the 510km WLTP claim, spirited back-road stretch included, and a 10–80 per cent top-up takes 25 minutes.

The rear-drive Premium is the one to have – its chassis, range and fast charging make the $5000 over the Dynamic easy to justify. It’s the biggest leap BYD has made in how its cars drive.

✅ Buy if: you want an affordable EV that’s surprising fun on a back road.

❌ Skip if: you need all-wheel drive – it isn’t offered here.

🏆 Verdict: the Atto 3 finally drives like it means it.
